Houston, we have liftoff.
So check this out, I have a site now.
I mean seriously. It’s taken me 4 years, but I finally have one. And I guess I should thank Scott for letting me steal his idea when it come to a site layout.
And now that I have a site, I don’t know what to post a blog about. I guess I’ll just have to bore everyone with the details of my life, week to week. Hope you have some tissue near by, because my life stories are real tearjerkers.
Well, I guess for starters, I’ll talk about my new job. You see, for a year, I was a freelance artist. I made enough to pay rent. And when I say “made enough”, I mean I literally only made enough to pay rent. The thing is, I loved it. I had my own hours, and I didn’t mind “working”. The last few months have hit hard though. I had to borrow money to pay rent, which is the last thing I wanted to do.
At first, I denied the fact that I’d have to get a job. Even though I was looking for a part-time job, I still was like “The freelance thing will kick in again and I wont have to get a ‘normal’ job.” But alas, it didn’t. Well it did, just not enough to pay bills again. So, I needed a job. Not only to pay rent, but to pay back those whom I borrowed money from.
About two weeks into the job search, I came across Pro-Copy. (Heh, this is the first time I’ve looked at the website. It really doesn’t match the store at all) I went in there and talked to the owner with my application in hand. He told me to come in the next day at 10am, and vuala, I have a job. My roommate (who was with me at the time) said it was like something out of a tv show or movie. People don’t just get jobs like that.
I guess I do though.
I like the job. I mean, it’s not my dream job, but it’s not bad either. I’ve learned how to print lots of different things, plus I get a discount on printing stuff myself. This is going to help a whole lot when it comes time for Megacon this March. And everyone there is really cool and a few are comicbook geeks, which is nice because we’ll sit and talk about comics and stuff while working. Hell, when I told my assistant manager that I was going to be in Orlando the first weekend of March, she was like “Wait you’re going to Megacon?”
It’s really surprising how many people don’t know how to use a Xerox machine though. It can’t be that hard to place a piece of paper next to large green arrow, and hit a giant green button that says start above it. I knew there would be some people who didn’t know how to use it, but the truth is 4 out of 5 people ask for help. The ones that are the worse are the “That’s not how you do it” while I’m standing there doing their job for them. I want to slam their heads on the Xerox, then tell them to leave.
Eh, I’m never going to like the general public. If it wasn’t for the costumers, retail really wouldn’t be that bad of a workplace.
…..
SO on Thursday, I submitted my first submission to Marvel through their ChesterQuest. For those of you who are too lazy to click the link and find out what that is, I’ll explain. Marvel has 12 open spots for contract work for new pencilers. This guy C.B. Cebulski is kind of like the talent scout for this contest. (The C in C.B. stands for Chester) I sent in some old and new stuff, and I really hope I get a good shot at this contest.
This ChestQuest has been going on for six months, Jan 31st being the last day to submit. In November, C.B. said he only had about 20 artists on his “short list”. That number could have easily doubled, even tripled since then, and I only hope my submission wasn’t too late. The thing is, I waited until the last day to submit anything.
I have to reasons for doing this.
-
I had no idea what I wanted to submit, since my art has been changing a whole lot (for the better) in the last few months.
-
I wanted to make sure they were going to get my best and latest work to see what I’m capable of right now.
Now, you can see here what I decided to do. I sent in my Atomic Robo short I did back in October, and I have no problems with that. It was the first time I really use the black backgrounds, and it turned out (to my surprise) great. Hell, I even got a few reviews on my art, since the issue the short is in came out the first week of Jan.
Hurray! My art is fine and decent!
That’s like one of three reviews on my short, and I’m psyched. I was a little surprised that I was getting credited like that. I didn’t think people would care to that extent. Hell, someone even added me to the comicbook database.
Oh God, why did they use that picture?
